Using For One Shared Earth with young readers
This book works well beyond the page. A few ways to extend the experience:
Earth observation — After reading, invite children to pick one part of the natural world they want to learn more about — an ocean, a forest, a species. What makes it worth protecting? What threatens it?
Small actions, big thinking — The book encourages children to think about individual choices. What’s one thing they could do differently this week that’s better for the planet? Start small and specific.
Poetry and language — The lyrical writing style is a good model for young writers. Invite children to write their own short poem about a place in nature they love.
Pairing with the Activity Book — The companion activity book extends the themes with interactive exercises. The two work well together as a unit for Earth Day programming or environmental curriculum.

They draw you into a vision of a world of our deepest longing—peace, community, devotion to caring for each other and for all who live on this beloved Earth.”
—Jennifer Elwell Comeau, children’s book author, novelist, Certified Forest Therapy Guide, and Earth ally

—Ellen Dee Davidson, award-winning children’s book author
“For One Shared Earth is a powerful new book by Daphne Mercer, with illustrations by Gerald Mercer. Expanding on the themes of their previous work, The Egret Tree, this book moves from the story of a single tree to a global vision of interconnectedness. Through vivid storytelling and art, For One Shared Earth inspires readers to recognize our shared responsibility in protecting the planet for future generations.”
